Robert M. Factor, MD, PhD

At Women's Psychotherapy Centre of Wisconsin, Bob has a psychotherapy practice for individuals, couples, and families seeking help with personal and relationship problems, depression, anxiety, and other life struggles. He has a practical and collaborative approach towards goals that include helping a person identify patterns that hinder them, identifying strengths, enhancing one's skills, and supporting the person through the process of change.

Bob has a passion for community service, expressed in long history of activism throughout his career. In addition to his practice at Women's Psychotherapy Centre, he serves as Medical Director of the Emergency Services Unit at the Mental Health Center of Dane County, where he has been on the staff since 1984. He is also Medical Director of the Community Support Program run by the Madison VA Medical Center, a position he has held since the program began in 1995.

Before joining Women's Psychotherapy Centre of Wisconsin, Bob was a member of the full-time faculty of the Department of Psychiatry of the UW Medical School from 1984-2002. He worked in the psychiatry outpatient clinic and was the Director of Residency Education for a decade. He continues to teach at the UW-Madison where he is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Professor Emeritus.

Bob is Board Certified in general psychiatry. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania . His did a residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in community psychiatry at the UW Hospital and Clinics. He also obtained an A.B. in biology from the University of Chicago; and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on ethology and the social and psychological origins of disease.
